We’ve all been there before; you overcooked the rice or undercooked it. It’s okay lets figure it out!

Pro Tip

Rinse your rice. After you add water to your rice you will notice that it’s cloudy. That cloudiness you see is starch, starch turns into a thickening agent that could make your rice clumpy and sticky. Rinse and repeat until water is clear. You should do this with all rices if you notice cloudy water.

*No stirring after you place the pot on simmer. This will cause heat and steam to escape the pot this will cause the temperature in the pot to decrease. You will have half cooked rice mixed with overcooked rice.

There are several types of rice and they sometimes need to be cooked differently.

We’ll walk you through it below:

1. Long Grain White Rice

With this rice most packages call for 1 cup of rice for every 2 cups of water. This is a little off, my measurements is 1 cup of rice to every 1 and 1/2 cups of water. You’ll also add 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp pf vegetable oil or olive oil. Bring to a boil, stir, reduce to simmer, and place the lid on tightly. Do not disturb to stir anymore until the rice is finished. Opening the lid will make steam escape and that is the main thing cooking the rice this will result in a inconsistent texture or undercooking. After the lid goes on check after 10 minutes, if completely done turn off and stir from the bottom up. (Tip: Want to add some flavor? Add 1 tbsp of Knorrs Powdered Chicken Bouillon Powder at the beginning of cooking process before the rice boils).

2. Jasmine Rice

Jasmine Rice is a very fragrant rice used in a lot of Chinese food. Again this is another rice that calls for 1 and 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice. Add 1 tsp of salt. Bring to a boil reduce heat to simmer, stir and close the lid tightly. Simmer for 10 mins check, if done stir from the bottom up.

3. Basmati Rice

This is a light fluffy rice typically used with Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. This rice is very easy to cook. This rice you can actually use the cooking instructions on the bag. Add 1 tsp of salt and 1 tbsp of butter for every cup of rice. Bring to a boil, stir, reduce the heat to simmer, and close the lid tightly. If done stir from the bottom up.
